Learning Through Experience

Every COR trip is made up of three main components: adventure activities, leadership programming, and spiritual formation. Each of these three components plays a vital role in the process of personal transformation that is our goal for each participant.

Adventure Activities

COR offers anywhere from short, 3-day trips to longer, expedition style courses up to three weeks or more, and these trips can consist of a single activity, such as backpacking, or multiple activities throughout the trip. Through the outdoor education model, we see the activity and types of activities we offer as integral to the personal development of our participants, and often suggest particular activities or lengths of trips to suit a group’s desired outcomes. We offer a wide variety of activities at a wide variety of skill levels; all of our trips are open to complete beginners unless otherwise noted. Some of the activities we offer include, but are not limited to:

Backpacking
Rock climbing
Canyoneering
Rappelling
Cross country & backcountry skiing
Whitewater rafting & kayaking
Mountain biking
Canoeing
Sea Kayaking
Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Caving
Fishing
Hunter Safety

Leadership

COR sees both hands-on leadership opportunities and taught leadership skills as essential to personal development. On courses, we can provide education on the following topics:

Leadership
Risk management
Conflict resolution
Self-knowledge
Communication
Group development
Debriefing
Teaching tips and techniques

Spiritual Formation

Spiritual formation is present on all of COR’s courses. Prayer and reflection make up a large part of this formation - time for personal daily prayer is present on every course, along with the opportunity for communal prayers such as the rosary or Liturgy of the Hours. We strive to have a chaplain present on every trip to offer daily Mass, Confession, and Adoration for the group. Finally, group debriefs on the learning outcomes of the day, opportunities to share personal stories, and our instructors’ facilitated discussions on our four pillars are all essential parts of the spiritual formation of a trip. However, we always strive to make this formation accessible to participants wherever they are at with their own personal faith journey. When working with secular groups, we provide time for personal reflection or prayer as desired and use virtue-based language to facilitate discussions on our pillars.
